Gail Griffith
Once I found the Embroiderers' Guild about 30 years ago I was hooked. My local branch in Somerset was inspirational, had fantastic workshops and great teachers; there were professional textile workers in the membership, during the time when textiles was really taking off as a multi-media operation. I took City and Guilds Part I while working and attended courses and workshops all over the country. At the same time, I continued making quilts and learning from local people, including women who worked at the local Van Heusen factories in West Somerset. Nowadays I continue to make a few quilts but have concentrated on using up the proverbial stash! I joined SWTG about 15 years ago but have not managed to produce new work for some years; it is a way to commit to exploring and making new work.
I am now reclaiming some creativity and find inspiration anywhere. I am currently working on a 9ff hanging of symbols taken from an eleventh century altar piece from Spain, on Russian hemp, including printing from stencils, gold paint, embroidery and gold-work. From my quilting work I create pieces which play with colour.
My work is usually based on fabric and thread, but also including paper, paint, printing, or anything really. I work mainly in 2 dimensions, occasionally 3D, but mostly what I call 2 1/2 D. I no longer want to put work under glass but framing and presentation are a challenge.
I rarely produce "commentary" work and am more interested in abstract/colour/pattern, having finished personal work. At the moment I am in transition to new work and creativity.
